Sunday Sighs: BPL Saving 800K Through Shutdowns

Effective today, all Brooklyn Public Library locations will cease providing service on Sundays. The shuttered branches include Borough Park, East Flatbush, Flatbush, Kensington, and Midwood, as well as the Central Library. Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind argued that these closures are particularly onerous for the borough's Orthodox Jewish community.

It is unfortunate that BPL had to make this decision, but Sunday service is our most expensive day of service, since our staff is paid for overtime on Sundays. We have also reduced spending in other areas, such as administrative costs and are limiting hiring, and will make further cuts next year to try to maintain hours of service. Customers can check hours, and conduct much of their library business on our website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org. Thanks, Unshelved, for helping us get the word out.
